Introduction to Number Theory: Building Number Sense
Grade 6-9 | Competition Focus: AMC 8 / AMC 10
This course introduces the number theory concepts that appear throughout math competitions, from AMC 8 through AMC 10. Topics include primes and composites, multiples and divisors, prime factorization and its applications, base numbers, modular arithmetic, divisibility rules, and linear congruences - developing the deep number sense that separates strong competitors from the rest.
What students will develop
- Fluency with primes, factorization, and divisibility rules
- Comfort working in different number bases
- Ability to apply modular arithmetic and solve linear congruences
- Strong number sense that transfers across algebra, counting, and geometry problems
Format: Small-group instruction with guided practice on real competition-style problems, building a number theory foundation that supports AMC 8 and AMC 10 preparation.
