Academic Writing G5-8: Building Clear, Evidence-Based Essays

This course prepares students for the kind of writing expected in middle school and beyond: organized, well-supported essays rather than free-form personal narrative. Students learn to form a clear thesis, structure body paragraphs around topic sentences and evidence, and cite specific details from texts or research to support their claims. Regular practice with outlining, drafting, and revising helps students move from a loose collection of ideas to a tightly argued piece of writing.

What students will develop

• Thesis development and essay organization, including clear topic sentences and paragraph structure
• The ability to select and cite relevant evidence to support a claim
• Analytical writing skills for responding to texts, prompts, and research questions
• Revision strategies to strengthen argument, clarity, and flow across drafts
• A strong foundation for the essay writing expected on standardized tests and in high school coursework

Format: Small-group instruction pairing structured essay instruction with guided drafting, peer review, and individual feedback, preparing students for the analytical writing demands of upper-level ELA and beyond.
